The first lymphatic rollers in New Zealand

We brought these machines into the country before anyone else here had them, and you still will not find another set like them in the region. If you have seen lymphatic roller sessions online and wondered where to try it locally, this is the place. Recovery Hub is at 151 High Street, Lower Hutt, a short walk from the centre of town and easy to reach from across the Hutt Valley and greater Wellington.

What is a lymphatic roller?

A lymphatic roller is a machine with rows of contoured wooden rollers that rotate under your body while adjustable infrared heat warms the area being worked on. You position yourself against the rollers and they do the work: a continuous rolling massage across the muscle and soft tissue, with raised sections on the wood adding an acupressure-style pressure as they pass.

It is not a hands-on massage, and it is not a compression machine either. It sits somewhere in between: a firm, rhythmic roll that many people describe as similar to a deep tissue massage, but one you control by how you sit or lie and how much of your weight you rest against the rollers.

How do lymphatic rollers work?

Several things happen at once, and you can adjust nearly all of them as you go.

  • Rolling massage across the tissue, continuous and rhythmic rather than static
  • Adjustable infrared heat, warming the tissue so the rolling feels deeper without needing to be harsher
  • Pressure set by you, simply by shifting how much weight you place against the rollers
  • Acupressure from the shaped wooden ridges as they travel across the area
  • A deep tissue massage-style experience without hands-on work
  • Used to support circulation and natural lymphatic movement

You reposition yourself as you go, spending longer on the areas you want to focus on.

Lymphatic drainage and circulation

Your lymphatic system moves fluid and waste around the body, and unlike your blood it has no pump of its own, so it relies on movement and pressure. The rolling action combined with infrared heat is a comfortable way of supporting circulation and natural lymphatic movement, which is why the rollers are often used as part of a lymphatic drainage or lymphatic massage routine. Everyone responds differently, and many people simply notice their legs feel lighter and looser afterwards.

Fluid retention, heavy or puffy legs

If you spend long days on your feet, sit at a desk, travel, train hard or notice puffiness through your legs and ankles, this is one of the most popular reasons people book. People often use warmth, movement and pressure as part of their routine when they are experiencing that heavy or puffy feeling, and a 20 or 30 minute roll is an easy way to get all three in one session.

Cellulite and body-care routines

Rolling massage combined with infrared heat is commonly used as part of a body-care routine focused on the appearance of cellulite and general skin and body maintenance. Results differ from person to person. This is a wellness and body-care service rather than a medical treatment, so think of it as something people use consistently over time alongside movement, hydration and their own routine, rather than a one-off fix.

A deep tissue massage-style roll

Lean in and it becomes a firm, deep tissue massage-style experience, working into tight glutes, hamstrings, calves and backs, which is why it is popular for muscle recovery after training. Ease off and it is a gentle, warming roll. Same machine, a completely different session depending on what your body wants that day.

Infrared heat

The infrared heat is adjustable and built into the rollers themselves, so the warmth goes into the exact area being worked on. Warm tissue relaxes and gives more easily, so the rolling feels deeper at the same pressure. It also makes the whole session considerably more relaxing, which is a big part of why people come back.

Areas you can target

  • Legs: calves, hamstrings, quads and the outer thigh
  • Glutes
  • Hips
  • Stomach
  • Back

You move and reposition yourself between areas, so a single session can cover one focus area thoroughly or several areas more briefly.

Choosing a 10, 20, 30, 45 or 60 minute session

10 minutes

$10

A quick introductory or single-area session. A good way to try the rollers for the first time, or to add a short leg session onto another booking.

20 minutes

$20

A shorter targeted session, usually one or two areas such as legs or glutes.

30 minutes

$30

A solid general session, or enough time to work through several areas without rushing.

45 minutes

$45

More time to move through multiple areas, spending longer on the spots you want to focus on.

60 minutes

$50

A full-body experience with plenty of time across legs, glutes, hips, stomach and back.

Prices are per person. There is no set protocol to follow; pick the length that suits the areas you want to work on and how much time you have.

What your first session is like

  • The machine is a padded bench-style unit with rows of smooth, contoured wooden rollers set into it, plus controls for the rollers and the infrared heat.
  • The sensation is a firm, warm, rhythmic rolling. Most people expect it to be uncomfortable and find it is not, because you decide how much weight you put into it.
  • The infrared heat builds gradually and can be adjusted at any point.
  • You lie or sit against the rollers, then shift yourself to bring the area you want to work on into contact with them.
  • You are in control of your positioning, your pressure and how long you stay on each area.
  • Our team will show you how the machine works, how to position yourself and how to adjust it. Just ask when you arrive, or again mid-session.
  • Comfort comes first. If anything feels too firm or too warm, ease off your weight or turn the heat down. There is no benefit in pushing into discomfort.

What to wear

Activewear is ideal: leggings or shorts and a t-shirt. Something smooth and close-fitting works best against the rollers. Avoid zips, buckles, thick seams and loose baggy layers. You stay fully clothed the whole time and there is nothing else you need to bring. If you are heading into a sauna or ice bath in the same visit, bring swimwear and a towel as well.
